Ever wonder what the gravel is like on the Sunshine Coast? Croissant Club CC shows us the goods.
Although he’s no longer living in the city,
Scott Schneider remains a linchpin of the Vancouver cycling scene. And despite now being a Roberts Creek local (where he has bike trails literally coming out of his backyard), he still helps run the quintessential Vancouver gravel crew;
Croissant Club CC. Always willing to wait patiently for us at the bottom of a trail, Scott spent the day showing us a few of the best gravel spots in his new neighbourhood.
But in true Scott style, "gravel bike" is FIRMLY in quotations on this one. You could bring a hardtail or even full-sus mountain bike on this route and still have a great time. But as long as you’ve got 42mm+ tires and a good attitude, you should be alright.
These trails are mostly flowy with just the right amount of tech, even for us roadies. However, always go your own pace and don’t be afraid to walk sections if you’re not feeling comfortable. Like, maybe the rock slab… Or the huge ride-on log that’s suspended like 8 feet over a creek… Use your discretion and make good choices.
And though there’s a good amount of climbing on this route, nearly all of it is done on well-surfaced FSRs and pavement (thank GOD). Save some legs for the last climb though, it’s a brute. But a worthy descent makes the juice worth the squeeze.
It’s the Sunshine Coast after all, so finish your day with a couple of pints and maybe a fresh-baked pretzel at Persephone Brewing, before coasting back down the hill to the ferry. A perfect day trip from the city. Good trails, good pals, good times.
Oh, and if you’ve been thinking about joining Croissant Club on one of their Friday morning rides. Do it. You won’t regret it.
Happy trails,
Love Machine & Croissant Club CC
